Nerve pain can be extremely unpleasant. If you suffer from it, it can affect your day. You have trouble getting up, doing small chores, or daily tasks. Sometimes holding a pen can already be painful, let alone writing a letter.
If you suffer from nerve pain, you want to get rid of it as soon as possible. What can you do about it? And can CBD oil or other CBD products help with nerve pain? What exactly is nerve pain and where does it come from?
In the next blog article, ProHemp will go into this in more detail.
What is nerve pain?
Nerve pain is a condition where the nerves are damaged and no longer function properly. This can be caused by carpal tunnel syndrome, diabetes, a spinal cord injury, or a hernia.
Once the nerves are damaged, you can have persistent nerve pain. We call this a chronic complaint. If you suffer from nerve pain, you may feel or experience the following:
- Prickling sensations
- A burning sensation
- Touch pain and nerve pain
- Tingling
- A cold and painful sensation
Pain is a warning from your body that something is wrong. When you feel pain, a substance is released that lets your brain know that something is not right in your body. If a nerve is damaged, you have permanent pain in your body. The nerve pain you experience is then a chronic pain complaint.
The pain complaint can occur at any time of the day. You often experience this right when you get up. It is difficult to get out of bed, and the first half hour can feel very unpleasant. Often, after you have prepared yourself, showered, and dressed, you may feel a little better. The pain can return at certain moments. This happens when you have to bend over, put on your shoes, or unload the dishwasher.
Nerve pain can also cause you to sleep poorly or have difficulty falling asleep. This can lead to restless nights and waking up feeling drained. Because of the nerve pain, it may be harder for you to enter REM sleep.
REM sleep is the most important stage of your sleep. Besides REM sleep, you can be in deep sleep or light sleep. You rest the most during REM sleep. Your body is 'paralyzed' during REM sleep and does not move. Only your eyes move very quickly. People usually dream during REM sleep.
If you sleep poorly, it can have a huge impact on your overall condition. Nerve pain can cause you to sleep worse, and as a result, your symptoms can only get worse. If you suffer from nerve pain, it can affect your entire life.
Medications for nerve pain
If you suffer from nerve pain, doctors often prescribe medications that block the nerves. When we talk about nerve-blocking agents, we mean antidepressants or medications used for epilepsy.
Medications can have serious side effects that may relieve pain but can also make it harder for some people to function.

Due to the side effects of medications, more and more people are choosing natural products like CBD oil. CBD oil can be a good choice if you suffer from nerve pain. However, be careful not to combine medications with CBD products such as CBD oil without proper guidance.
CBD oil can enhance the effect of some medications, causing them to work longer or slower. Always consult your (family) doctor before starting CBD combined with medications.
What is CBD?
CBD is becoming increasingly popular, but what exactly is CBD? CBD, which stands for cannabidiol, is a compound from the cannabis plant. Besides CBD, the cannabis plant also contains other cannabinoids and terpenes.
CBD is rapidly gaining popularity and more and more people are experiencing the power of CBD. This leads to many positive experiences on the internet. CBD itself is a paste-like substance that cannot be taken pure. This is why it is often made into oil.
The lightest oil is 5% and is often used for children or preventive purposes. The strongest CBD oil is 30% and is used for severe complaints such as intense nerve pain. Stronger than 30% is not possible because the oil becomes too thick.
The cannabis plant used to make CBD products is only used for CBD. It contains a small percentage of CBD, but it is not comparable to cannabis oil. Cannabis oil contains a lot of THC and is therefore illegal in the Netherlands.
CBD oil for nerve pain
CBD can affect our body's own endocannabinoid system. This system is partly responsible for transmitting pain signals. When the system is out of balance, pain signals may be transmitted incorrectly, causing you to experience more pain than actually exists.
When using CBD oil, your body receives cannabinoids again, allowing the system to regain balance. This can improve nerve signal transmission, resulting in less or no pain at all.

In this case, CBD oil can be the solution to experience less pain or completely get rid of your pain complaints. CBD oil can provide positive relief for nerve pain.
You can safely use CBD oil. Due to the low THC content, it is not possible to get a ‘high’ feeling or overdose. Many CBD users report that after two weeks of use, they can sleep better.
This can reduce pain and increase your energy levels. After a few weeks, CBD can help you experience less pain and be able to do more. The experience of CBD users with nerve pain is therefore very positive.
There are different types of CBD oil. The most well-known is CBD Full Spectrum. This CBD oil contains, besides CBD, all other cannabinoids and terpenes from the cannabis plant.
The cannabinoids enhance each other's effects, allowing you to experience the 'entourage effect.' There is also a small percentage of THC present. THC is commonly found in weed oil, which is not comparable to CBD oil.
CBD oil contains less than 0.05% THC, which is negligible and makes CBD oil legal in the Netherlands. If you want to be sure you do not ingest any THC, ProHemp offers a THC-free CBD oil. You can be sure to benefit from the power of all cannabinoids, but without THC.
How do you use CBD oil for nerve pain?
When you start using CBD oil for nerve pain, it is important to consider the buildup phase. Your body needs to properly absorb the CBD into the system.
It is not a miracle cure where you feel effects after just one day. If you suffer from nerve pain and want to use CBD oil, we advise the following:
- Use CBD oil for a longer period
- Take into account the 6-8 week buildup phase
- Assess your pain complaints and choose the CBD percentage accordingly
- Use CBD oil daily for optimal effect
Use CBD oil for a longer period
During the first eight weeks, you are in the buildup phase. This is the phase where your body needs to get used to the CBD oil. After a few weeks, you may already experience a calm feeling in your body and better sleep. This allows you to wake up rested and with more energy.
You start with two to three drops per dose. Do this three times a day. Drop the CBD oil under your tongue and hold it there for 90 – 120 seconds. Then swallow it with, for example, a glass of water. Use the CBD oil half an hour before or after a meal.
If you have severe pain complaints, start with CBD oil 10% 10 ml. When this bottle is finished, continue with CBD oil 20%. If you experience mild pain complaints, start with CBD oil 5% and after the buildup phase switch to CBD oil 10%.
Increase by 1 drop every three days until you reach 6 drops per dose. If you go from 10% to 20%, halve the dosage and increase by one drop every three days.
