What is the difference between cannabis oil and CBD oil? Cannabis oil and CBD oil are often compared. However, these two ‘siblings’ are very different. One causes a ‘high’ feeling, and with the other, you can take as much as you want without overdosing. One is legal and the other is illegal in the Netherlands. But why? What makes this oil so special, and why do we hear about it more often? We explain the difference between cannabis oil and CBD oil in the following blog article.

THC makes the difference…

The cannabis plant contains 104 different substances, of which two are very well known. The two most famous substances are CBD (cannabidiol) and THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). Therefore, the cannabis plant can be divided into two types: the cannabis plant and the hemp plant. From the cannabis plant, you can make cannabis oil, also known as THC oil, and from the hemp plant, you make CBD oil. The biggest difference is the THC content. THC is a substance that gives you a ‘high’ feeling. Dutch law prohibits the free trade of the psychoactive substance THC. A product may not contain more than 0.05% THC. CBD oil contains less than 0.05% THC. This is a negligible amount, or ‘non-detectable.’ The biggest difference between cannabis oil and CBD oil is the THC content.

Biggest difference between CBD oil and cannabis oil

The presence of large amounts of THC in the cannabis plant causes a psychoactive effect. You do not experience this with CBD oil made from the hemp plant. THC also means that the dosage must be precise. If you use CBD oil, it does not matter if you take a few drops too many. Due to the low THC content, you cannot overdose or experience the psychoactive effect.

These are the biggest differences between THC and CBD oil:

CBD oil

  • Derived from the hemp plant
  • High CBD content
  • Suitable for animals
  • Suitable for children
  • No psychoactive effect
  • No overdose possible
  • You may participate in traffic
  • Legal in the Netherlands

Cannabis oil

  • Derived from the cannabis plant
  • High THC content
  • Not suitable for children or animals
  • Psychoactive effect
  • Precise dosage required
  • You may not participate in traffic
  • Illegal in the Netherlands

The biggest difference between cannabis oil and CBD oil is the THC content. This also explains why CBD oil is legal in the Netherlands, as long as the THC content remains below 0.05%.
